He Has Given Us of His Spirit–1 John 4:13 Devotional

“By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit” (1 John 4:13, ESV).

It’s still dark out, and the light is just beginning to dawn, as it barely peeks in through the cracks in the curtains. Eyes slowly fluttering as consciousness takes form. Thoughts of the day before and regrets take a toll on the mind of the believer as she lay there wondering how long her Lord will put up with her obstinance and rebellion. As she lay there thinking her soul begins to cry out in desperation for his mercy and grace to cover her. She asks for his help to make it through the day without offending his precious Holy Spirit that she can only hope still dwells within her. As her prayer quiets for a moment she feels a still small voice whisper sweet words in her mind. “Be still, and know that I am God. By this we know we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit” (Psalms 46:10a & 1 John 4:13 ESV).

How many of us have felt this way upon the first few moments of the day or even the last? God’s word is so powerful; powerful enough that even he uses it to bring comfort and conviction (Hebrews 4:12 &. 2 Timothy 3:16). He has given us a sign of his dedication, which is his Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13, 14) and scripture that gives us guidelines to know that we are his (1 John 2). His Holy Spirit is like an engagement ring, showing the love of the Father off. In those early moments that morning this saint was able to repent of her sin and come back to a place of safety within the arms of her Father. We all can do the same thing at any time. His arms are always open wide and ready for us to return.
