Standing Under the Trees: 2 Samuel 5:23-25
Therefore David inquired of the Lord, and He said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall advance quickly. For then the Lord will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” And David did so, as the Lord commanded him; and he drove back the Philistines from Geba as far as Gezer (2 Samuel 5:23-25).
Imagine! The Lord himself, marching in the treetops to go to battle with you…for you. Can you honestly think of anything more assuring?
Each of us is faced with our own battles to fight. Some have the potential to be physically destructive, while yet another can bring emotional pain not visible to most but that eats away at our heart and soul if not struck down. However, more often than not, we try to fight our own battles–ill-equipped as we might be. As a result we end up wounded and spending our time trying to heal instead of being able to live victoriously in the Lord.
When we take David’s approach of asking God what action to take instead of handling things ourselves, we too will hear God and his mighty hosts marching above and before us to win the battle over stress, financial woes, addictions, heartaches and self-doubt.
Yes, the battles will come. We will be faced with opposition-sometimes from all sides. But we will never be without protection from the army of our God. All we have to do is get out of the way.
