The God of Gray Hairs – Isaiah 46:4 Devotional
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you. I will sustain you and I will rescue you” (Isaiah 46:4, NIV).
Every Thursday afternoon Veronica, had to walk past the town cemetery to get to her house after her piano lesson. In winter it was almost twilight when she finished and she was afraid. The graveyard was so still, and quiet, and the graves came all the way up to the fence, close to the path. Every week, the walk was an ordeal, the anxiety started Thursday morning, and continued throughout the day. She knew there was nothing that could really hurt her, but that wasn’t enough to dispel her fears. At a family dinner one Saturday, the graveyard walk came up, and the adults at the table offered their solutions. One uncle gave her a rabbits foot to put in her pocket, a sure thing to chase away unfriendly spirits. Another gave her a torch, so she would have a bright light for her path. Her elderly great aunt told Veronica that she should just trust God, and not be afraid, which while true, didn’t seem to help much. Then her cousin, a boy of twenty said, “I know what it’s like to be frightened. On Thursday nights after piano, I’ll meet you afterwards, and walk home with you.” He didn’t take the fear away, but he lifted it from his young cousin and placed the burden on his own shoulders.’
In the same way, God has said that he will carry our burdens. He will sustain us, throughout our lives. Not just when we are frightened children, but right through to our old age, when our hair is turning gray, he promises to sustain us, and to rescue us.
It is a beautiful word sustain. It means to give strength, and comfort, to encourage and hearten and nourish. This is what God does. We don’t have to face our troubles relying only on our own strength, because God is with us all of our days. His care doesn’t stop when we reach adulthood, we are not left to our own devices, God’s tenderness, his love and care and protection last throughout our lives. Wonderful Savior!
Prayer: Thank you Lord that you are a God who cares for me, my whole life long, that you have promised to sustain me, all my days, let me cast my cares on you, and trust you always.
